Overview

Neurology can initially appear a challenging subject. This day of CPD will start with a simple approach to any neurological presentation allowing you to localise disease and formulate a differential diagnosis list for your patients. Neurological cases often present as emergencies and the next sessions will cover two such presentations – collapse and epilepsy. This will leave you confident to deal with these urgent cases in the initial stages. In the final lectures we ask our Specialist team for their view on emerging challenges in neurology.

key topics

  • Neurological examination
This is a ‘something for everyone session’ which will enhance your confidence in evaluating cases and understanding what could be on the differential diagnosis list.
  • Collateral diagnostic exams
Following initial case evaluation this session will cover the next steps in certain types of neurological presentation. It will also help you to guide your clients through the options, whether that is in-house management or referral.
  • Approach to a collapsed patient
Differentiating neurological disease from cardiac disease is a starting point in these cases. But what next? Should you refer right away or are their further clues that can be gained by detailed examination or from blood work? This practical case-based session will help clarify your best approach.
  • An update on treatment of epilepsy
With epilepsy forming a large part of a neurologist’s caseload, being up to date on current treatments for managing this condition is key. The diagnosis may seem straightforward, but this is a lifelong condition so how should you best manage these cases?
  • Paroxysmal disorders… only gluten intolerance?
Sudden onset, sudden offset cramping is just one example of these presentations which can be frustrating to recognise, diagnose and manage. Ensuring all the differentials are considered is essential in guiding management and this session will leave you ready to guide your clients.
  • Polyneuropathies… and other feline weaknesses
Rather than leaving this topic in ‘the other weird neuro diseases’ this session will grasp the nettle and explain to you why this is something we should be thinking about!
